(USGovernment-News.Com, September 17, 2015 ) With the rising number of laundry pod lawsuits being filed and calls to poison control centers growing over young experiencing injuries and laundry pod poisoning, a new voluntary safety standard for laundry packets have recently been approved. Wright & Schulte LLC notes that the first safety standard for packaging and labeling the single-load laundry packets was approved Tuesday by American Society for Testing and Materials (A.S.T.M.) International, a non-profit global standards-setting organization. Developing the standard was an effort over the past year of the A.S.T.M’s laundry pod committee, made up of consumers, cleaning industry representatives, medical providers and officials from the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. Wright & Schulte LLC is currently representing numerous families in laundry pod lawsuits against Procter & Gamble, the maker of Tide Pods and other Laundry Detergent Manufacturers. The families involved in laundry pod lawsuit claims are seeking compensation for serious injuries their young children suffered while one family mourns the loss an elderly family member allegedly due to exposure to the liquid laundry pods after they mistaking took them for candy.

“We are pleased that a new standard has been set for laundry pod packaging, but we also know this standard is voluntary,” says Wright & Schulte. “As we have said before, we believe children and older adults would be safe from serious injury and poisoning if manufacturers would be required to follow mandatory safety guidelines.”

According to a report from the New York Times, the new standard calls for detergent manufacturers to:

•Place the pods in opaque containers so children cannot see the pods

•Make the containers harder to open and place warning labels on the front

and back

•Add a bitter taste to the film that encases the detergent to deter children from putting the packets in their mouths

•Make the film take longer to dissolve once wet

Liquid laundry detergent pods have been popular since they came on the U.S. market three years ago. Consumers like the convenience of the pods because they are pre-measured to wash a single load of laundry. However, because of the bright colors of the small packets, youngsters mistake them for candy and ingest or inhale the contents. The new packaging standard does not require manufacturers to change the composition of their laundry detergent products to make it less toxic for children. Additionally, the standard does not require detergent makers to “tone down the pods’ appearances.”

American Association of Poison Control Center reports show that so far this year, 7,184 children 5 and younger have been sickened or injured purportedly due to laundry detergent pods (AAPCC). Last year, the AAPCC recorded 11,852 calls from poison centers nationwide of laundry pod exposure, up from 10, 273 in 2013. Children who put the product in their mouths have had excessive vomiting, wheezing and gasping, according to the AAPCC. Some children get sleepy, and have breathing problems serious enough to need a ventilator to help them breathe. The detergent can also cause serious eye problems, such as corneal abrasions, according to the AAPCC.
