Somersworth Drug Task Force Seeks State of Emergency, Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire Comments

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 10, 2015 ) Somersworth, New Hampshire -- In November 2014, Somersworth Mayor Dana Hilliard formed a task force to examine and devise a course of action to combat the rapidly expanding heroin problem within the city. With the entire state of New Hampshire suffering the effects of the heroin epidemic, Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire believes drastic measures are necessary to protect and heal the citizens affected by the devastating narcotic.

Fosters reports the task force presented its recommendations on September 8th. The leading recommendation was to declare a State of Emergency in order to direct resources toward countermeasures. City Councilor David Witham suggested declaring a public health emergency instead. Other suggestions included softer measures such as increased state law enforcement involvement, engaging communities in free or low-cost activities to promote awareness, and increased availability of rehabilitation resources. Heroin rehab in New Hampshire is not readily available to residents of Somersworth. Other drug rehabilitation support programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are also missing. Mayor Hilliard asked the task force to continue working toward resolutions until the end of the year, stating that the heroin problem Somersworth faces should be addressed as a community effort.

A representative of Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire comments,

"New Hampshire has made the unfortunate mistake of allowing the drug abuse problem to reach such dire straits. Drug rehabs in New Hampshire are under supported and straining under the enormous task of treating those suffering from addiction across the state. With explosion of heroin related overdose deaths in the state, rehabilitation centers specializing in heroin rehab in New Hampshire are in high demand, with the dire consequence for those unable to receive treatment. As a center in the midst of the battle to help New Hampshire recover, Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire fully supports declaring a State of Emergency in order to rectify the problem. Bringing awareness to the widespread and devastating effects of the far-reaching drug epidemic is the first step to returning the state and country to a healthy and prosperous state."
