Newark Police Anticipate Rise in Crime as Students Return to School, Drug Rehab Newark Comments

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 10, 2015 ) Newark, New Jersey -- The Newark Post reports that police are increasing patrols and police presence this September into October in anticipation of a crime spike as students return to school at the University of Delaware. While Newark typically experiences a relatively low crime rate, authorities have noted an increase at the beginning of the Fall semester. They have attributed the spike to the presence of new students who are vulnerable to people with malicious intents. Drug Rehab Newark supports the University of Delaware's attempts to reduce crime rates this September, but encourages a more hands-on approach to reducing alcohol and drug related incidents.

By increasing patrols and officer's presence, the Newark Police Department hopes to combat the predicted crime increase. Plain clothed officers will be dispatched throughout the month to identify and track suspicious people. They are particularly concerned about the possibility of daytime attacks and those against intoxicated people. University of Delaware Police Chief Patrick Ogden says that though they do encourage abstinence among students, they understand there will be lapses and they do not want to cause a disconnect.

"We know they're going to experiment and try alcohol and that kind of thing. If we send that kind of message, we'll lose the audience. We talk to them about making decisions." Ogden said, noting the ineffectiveness of simply pushing abstinence.

A representative of Drug Rehab Newark comments,

"As a center offering addiction treatment in Newark, Drug Rehab Newark understands the plight of the University of Delaware Police Department. With the influx of people just entering adulthood and experiencing the freedom associated with on-campus college life, many of them are vulnerable not only to robbery and other crimes, but the pressure to experiment with alcohol and drugs. People under the influence of these substances are often at the mercy of those around them, which has led to many tragedies. Though the university's police department is taking great strides to prevent and discourage crime, a more hands-on approach is necessary to curb alcohol or drug related incidents. Education about the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse as well as programs for those in need of help recovering should be in place. The availability of such resources would likely significantly impact any developing problems they may encounter."
