2014- Drug Overdose Kills More in Tennessee Than an Auto Accidents; Drug Rehab Nashville Comments

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 10, 2015 ) Nashville, Tennessee -- The Leaf-Chronicle of Clarksville, Tennessee reports that the toll of annual deaths caused by drug overdose for the state increased in 2014 by nearly 100 people. 2014 saw a record-breaking 1,263 deaths attributed to drug overdose compared to the 2013 total of 1,166. Last year more people died in the state of Tennessee due to drug overdose than those killed by drunk driving, firearms, or hypertension.

The Tennessee Department of Health approved the use of Naloxone in hopes of decreasing the rate of overdoses in the state. Naloxone has been used by emergency responders and as part of addiction treatment in Nashville and other major cities for years. When injected the drug reverses the potentially deadly effects of an opioid overdose nearly immediately, extending the time available for effective medical support. Though Tennessee has also experienced a decrease in prescription drug diversion, it was not enough to prevent the increased death rate associated with drug abuse.

In the wake of the reported increase in drug overdose deaths, Commissioner John Dreyzehner urges those who are at risk opioid overdose or those who are associated with people at risk for overdose to speak to a health-care provider about obtaining Naloxone for emergency use, calling it "a very safe antidote that anyone can learn to administer."

A representative of Drug Rehab Nashville comments,

"With 91 of Tennessee's 95 counties reporting at least one overdose death, Department of Health Commissioner Dreyzehner's desperation to spread awareness of a preventive measure is understandable. 28 counties reported at least one dozen and Davidson, Knox, and Shelby counties each reported over 100 deaths in 2014 attributed with drug overdose. Drug overdose is the third leading cause of death in the state- that is not an ignorable problem. The availability and public knowledge of emergency supportive medications like Naloxone is great, but also only a reactive solution. Prevention and public awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse as well as addiction treatment in Nashville and the rest of Tennessee should be the primary objective of the Tennessee Department of Health. A proactive approach to prevention rather than reactively trying to limit the damage is the only way to overcome Tennessee's growing overdose problem."
