(USGovernment-News.Com, April 20, 2015 ) Birmingham, AL --In 1991, the FDA approved the use of Zofran to patients undergoing surgery or cancer treatments. Since then, it has been provided to pregnant women for the use of curding their morning sickness.
The FDA has never approved the use of Zofran during pregnancy, and now that complications have shown from this use, the manufacturers of the drug are in hot water.
Some of the side effects that Zofran has been thought to cause include heart defects and cleft palate or lips in the infants.
There are claims that GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Zofran, knew about these risks, yet did nothing to stop expectant mothers from using their product. In fact, it is still being given to about a million women every year.
The company has already paid at least $3 million due to previous charges including fraud and misleading advertisements.
