(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 31, 2008 ) SACRAMENTO – OBSNews.com – California State Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero spoke recently with OBSNews in a wide ranging video interview at the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 29th annual convention and business expo in Sacramento. She discussed the state of California's political climate as well as important issues facing the Latino community such as business and education.
"We've got to always ascertain and keep in mind the direction and viability of public education," said the Senator from East Los Angeles' 24th Senate District. She also pointed out the important contributions of political consultant Roy Perez who was nominated for Businessman of the Year at the national chamber's convention. "He's looked at the link between the economy, between business, and education."
Romero also discussed the importance of Hispanic-owned businesses, in particular small businesses and those owned by female Latinas. She pointed to the fact that Latino- and Latina-owned businesses have been growing three times as fast as the national average.
She highlighted the importance of education and stressed that her constituents see education as the underlying foundation for a strong economy.
Troubling to the Senator is the fact that an estimated 25 percent or more of CaliforniaÂ’s high school students do not graduate from high school, including 1/3 of Latino students. She indicated that her legislative priorities will be to attempt to reduce the high drop out rates for all students and narrow the achievement gap for students in the lowest performing ranks.
