White Privilege in the Spotlight of Ferguson's Wake

(USGovernment-News.Com, December 04, 2014 ) San Francisco, CA -- The events in Ferguson have brought the controversial topic of "white privilege" to the forefront of the American psyche. According to Wikipedia, white privilege (or white skin privilege) is a term for societal privileges that benefit white people beyond what is commonly experienced by non-white people under the same social, political, or economic circumstances. Many white people are quick to deny the existence of these privileges, but YouTube and other social media have brought a new perspective to the discussion of race. Making the denial of white privilege even more difficult, are videos like this one; where a black man is reportedly "making people nervous" by 'walking with his hands in his pockets' in what appears to be freezing weather. Since the death of Michael Brown, there have been 14 teens killed in altercations with police officers, 6 of them were African American. VonDerrit Myers Jr. was shot 3 times by off duty officer Jason Flanery. Flanery claims the child was holding a gun, while VonDerrit's parents maintain that he had a sandwich. Would Vonderrit be alive today if he were white?

White privilege doesn't stop with police encounters. Proponents maintain that it is a global condition. Indigenous Australians were excluded in the process of creating the Australian Federation, and so were its benefits. In Peru, LAN Airlines recently posted job openings for "light skinned people" because they more accurately reflected its client base. In New York, Trayon Christian was recently arrested for purchasing a $350.00 designer belt, under the "suspicion" that the transaction was 'fraudulent'.

Even the newly popular crowdfunding craze is not exempt from the white privilege debate. Indiegogo has recently launched a crowdfunder campaign for someone in 'desperate need of a little white privilege". Eric Nelson maintains that he recently left work and found a couple stranded in the parking lot with a flat tire; he had a jack and helped. A local police officer didn't appreciate his goodwill and charged him with 'disturbing the peace.' Nelson was released the next day on his own recognizance, and eventually fought the charges and won. The question remains, would he have been arrested if he were another color. And will the crowdfunding project bring the attention to white privilege that he's looking for. One thing is for certain, cameras and social media have put conversations once frowned upon into the spotlight, and they aren't going anywhere. Inequality and discrimination have become impossible to hide, police brutality is now daily mainstream news, and even the United Nations has condemned the U.S. and called for a crackdown.
