Spontaneous Combustion of Glass Products

(USGovernment-News.Com, November 14, 2014 ) Miami, FL -- Imagine the panic when a mother in South Florida heard glass shattering in her home. Naturally, she immediately assumed an intruder had come in, possibly to rob or even harm her family.

She ran into her seven-year old son’s room, where the noise had seemed to come from. What she found was even more unbelievable than what she had originally thought.

Shattered glass covered everything in sight, including her son’s bare skin. Her eyes darted to figure out what had caused the dangerous mess – a desk that she has purchased from Ikea only about two years ago.

This family is not the first to experience such a phenomenon. In fact, several HUNDRED people have complained about their home furnishings that were made of glass suddenly bursting. These complaints were made to the Consumer Product Safety Commission just within the past four years. Many of the items, but not all, were purchased from Ikea.

One man, known as a glass expert, Mark Meshulam, says, "Yes, glass can spontaneously explode, especially if it’s tempered glass.” He goes on to explain that this is normally caused by either a chip in the product that causes its entire form to become weak or an impurity that finds its way into the glass when it is manufactured. In Ikea’s case, he feels that the cause is most likely the latter.

The Florida boy whose desk shattered was, thankfully, unharmed for the most part. Although, the boy very well could have been seriously injured. His family has not found it necessary to pursue legal action for product liability, but they have asked Ikea to stop selling that desk model and to put warning labels on their other glass products. They have not received a response.
