Lockheed Martin Wins $41 Million U.S. Defense Contract To Sustain the Global Transportation Network

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 07, 2008 ) MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has won a $41-million contract from the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) to extend sustainment of the Global Transportation Network (GTN) command and control system. The sustainment contract brings the total value of the GTN contract since its award to Lockheed Martin in 1995 to $475 million.

GTN is a web-based, automated information system that provides a family of transportation users and service providers – in both the U.S. Department of Defense and commercial sectors – with near real-time in-transit visibility and command and control capabilities. Customers anywhere in the world can access and employ the integrated system for transportation and deployment information, which enables them to identify the location and scheduling of materiel, deployed forces and support personnel. GTN ensures effective execution of operations by helping logistics commanders make better plans and decisions during peace and war.

The GTN system now averages 4.5 million transactions daily and recently processed its 10 billionth transaction.

“Through our technical expertise and domain knowledge, the Lockheed Martin team has maintained a solid and trusted relationship with USTRANSCOM in support of operational distribution and transportation directives,” said Angie Heise, director of Lockheed Martin’s Savi Logistics Systems. “GTN is like a Fed-Ex or UPS tracking system for the military, but it’s even more sophisticated because it fuses data from 30 different DoD information systems and 240 commercial carriers in the land, air and ocean transportation modes.”

The contract calls on the Lockheed Martin team to continue to operate and maintain GTN, identify and resolve system operational issues, analyze user requirements, and support worldwide user operations. The contract also requires continuing support for USTRANSCOMÂ’s GTN Pre-Planned Product Improvement (P3I) Enterprise Data Warehouse infrastructure until these functions are absorbed by the Integrated Data Environment / GTN Convergence (IGC) contract, also managed by the Lockheed Martin team. IGC expands on the GTN concept by enriching and expanding its support capabilities through integration with other software systems along with the development of user communities to collaborate on best practices that can continuously reinforce improvements throughout the information platform.

Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.
