(USGovernment-News.Com, August 05, 2014 ) New York, NY -- Mirena Lawsuit News: As hundreds of women pursue Mirena IUD lawsuits for injuries allegedly caused by the long-acting contraceptive device, a new study has linked levonorgestrel-emitting IUDs to an increased risk of breast cancer. The research, which was published last month in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that women who used such an IUD to treat heavy menstrual bleeding were 19% more likely to develop breast cancer. The study followed 93,000 Finish women between the ages of 30 and 49 who had used a levonorgestrel IUD between 1994 and 2007.

Levonorgestrel is the synthetic progestin released by Mirena. Out of the 93,000 women included in the study, 1,542 were diagnosed with breast cancer. Based on the incidence of the disease among women of the same age in the general population, the authors of the article had expected only 1,292 such diagnoses. However, they noted that that their research did not account for risk factors that may have predisposed women in this particular patient population to breast cancer, and called for additional studies of the issue.
The publication of this research comes as hundreds of women pursue Mirena IUD lawsuits that seek compensation for uterine perforations, ectopic pregnancies, and other personal injuries allegedly caused by the birth control device. In April, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals acknowledged in a Stockholder Letter that it had been named in at least 1,800 such claims. Court documents indicate that that a 924 Mirena lawsuits have been filed in a consolidated litigation underway in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297) Another 612 complaints that put forth similar allegations have been filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York.
(In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434.)

According to court records, all of these lawsuits allege that spontaneous migration of the Mirena IUD can result in a number of serious personal injuries, including:
Uterine perforations
Ectopic pregnancy
Miscarriage
Embedment of uterine wall
Cervical perforations
Infertility
Abscesses
Finally, plaintiffs in Mirena lawsuits accuse Bayer of overstating the benefits of the IUD and downplaying the potential for serious Mirena injuries. Among other things, they point to a 2009 warning letter the company received from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that reached similar conclusions about one of Bayer’s Mirena promotional campaigns.
