Salmonella Outbreak in Chicken Resisting Common Antibiotics

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 09, 2013 ) WINSTON-SALEM, NC – An outbreak of salmonella has recently occurred, which is linked to raw chicken from California. The incident has caused an extremely high hospitalization rate of 42 percent.

In this outbreak, there are seven strains of which many are antibiotic resistant, according to the food safety director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington D.C.

This incident has had nearly double the hospitalizations of the normal rate for salmonella including an estimated 278 people in 18 states across the country, while there have been no deaths reported. The chickens have been linked to Foster Farms in three separate California plants, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Reports indicated that the frontline antibiotics used to treat the salmonella are effective for treating the illness, however there are some antibiotic resistant strains like this one that commonly used antibiotics may not be effective and may require stronger antibiotics to be used.

At this point no recall has been announced, while the agencies’ Food Safety and Inspection Service are not able to link the illnesses to a specific product or production period.

Consumers can identify if their products have come from this plant by the following codes: P6137, P6137A and P7632.

Some common symptoms of salmonella food poisoning include:

• Chills
• Craps
• Diarrhea
• Fever
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Most symptoms will appear between eight and 72 hours after eating the chicken, and may last up to seven days, according to the USDA. This can be deadly to those with a weak immune system including that of infants and the elderly.

The Winston-Salem personal injury attorneys have recognized that there have been 29,444 illnesses related to salmonella poisoning between 2009 and 2010, and have represented a number of salmonella poisoning victims in need of legal representation.
