It is believed that the scam artists are those who actually run the online pharmacies or those who have purchased customer information from these pharmacies. The scam works by targeting those who have purchased supplements or prescriptions online and calling them stating that the individual could be charged for illegally buying these items online.
One victim said they received a phone call from a person claiming to work for the Drug Enforcement Administration of the United States. The caller then claimed that the victim needed to pay a $2,500 fee in order to be to part of a so-called “defendant release program”. In one case the man requested that the victim meet at a particular location with the cash.
