Yamaha allegedly marketed its outboard motors as “high power” engines that exhibit an “unmatched reliability and durability.” Motors manufactured by a major company, such as Yamaha, are expected to perform for “several thousand hours of [use]” before serious repairs should be necessary, according to allegations posed in a pending class action lawsuit filed in Florida. Owners of Yamaha boats with the F-Series outboard motor, however, have reported motor failure and damage after only 500 to 700 hours of use—falling far below industry expectations, the suit claims. According to the complaint, Yamaha offers a 3-year warranty to consumers; however, the corrosion regularly manifests after this warranty has expired, leaving owners with out-of-pocket payment for repairs as their only option, the suit alleges.
It has been alleged that because the purported defect is hidden from view and corrodes the motor’s interior, which is also hidden from view, owners had no reasonable way of knowing about the alleged defect or avoiding any resulting damages, according to the complaint. Had the owner known of the alleged defect, it is believed he or she would not have purchased the boat, or would have paid substantially less. It has been alleged that Yamaha knew of this defect and its potential to damage the motor, yet continued to place the product on the market without warning.
