FBI Allowed Informants to Commit over 5,600 Crimes

(USGovernment-News.Com, August 17, 2013 ) Arlington, TX -- The FBI gave its informations permission to break laws at least 5,678 times in one year. The U.S. Justice Department ordered the FBI to begin tracking crimes performed by its informants more than a decade ago, after the agency had admitted it allowed Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger to operate a brutal crime crime in exchange for information about the Mafia.

However, since then, the agents have authorized an average of 15 crimes a day, including everything from buying and selling illegal drugs to bribing government officials and plotting robberies. FBI officials give their informants, usually criminals themselves, is an indispensable part of investigating criminal organizations and street crimes.

USA TODAY was able to obtain a copy of the FBI’s 2011 report under the Freedom of Information Act. While it does not spell out the types of crimes the agents authorized or how serious they were, it showed that the FBI was responsible for only about 10 percent of criminal cases prosecuted in federal court in 2011.
