(USGovernment-News.Com, March 05, 2013 ) Abu Dhabi -- There is a new set of unified building codes that every new building in the emirate will have to follow starting in 2014.
The code will be the cause for safer buildings with less pressing of the acceptability envelope. The building should now have longer lifespans, and will pave the way for a new era of engineering, construction, and design for the entire industry.
Up to this latest move, the Abu Dhabi International Building Code (ADIBC) has based most of its rules off International Code Council settings, as well as some customized for the city itself. These rules were considered, essentially, to be optional for builders and developers.
Starting in the spring of 2014, that will no longer be an option, and the rule set will have to be followed. All proposed projects within Abu Dhabi will have to meet the standards, according to the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), which developed the regulations.
The set of uniformed codes will end the general confusion of technical issues that have plagued the current system. The use of so many international codes from France, Germany, and the United States, made it difficult for the DMA to function properly as a body, and the new rule set promises to remove some of that concern.
Majid Al Mansouri, who chairs the DMA, noted that the codes have been based upon the US-developed International Code Council standards, as well as the adapted local needs of items like the climate and environment. He added that the rules would be revisited by the UAE every three years to ensure the considerations were apt and being followed properly.
Anthony Ray, who is an architect behind the multi-million dirham projects in the capital follows the recommended preliminary version of the codes, stated that the new ADIBC "will give a consistency and will strengthen the design process and the ability of production and construction".
He added: "It stops the confusion. In the complexity of buildings today, the next generation of codes is required.”
