Rhinos Being Poached Following National Park Flood, Army called for Help reports Donald Bernard Tips

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 28, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Four rhinoceros were killed by poachers in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) since Tuesday. The latest was killed Thursday, and promoted the Assam Government to demand a CBI inquiry as well as posting Army in the borders of the park area.

The killings of the endangered animal were noted as “shocking” by the Minister of State for Environment Jayanthi Natarajan, who ordered a probe into the incidents. Such works is to be carried out by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and a report will be expected within a week.

“I am shocked... Unscrupulous poachers have exploited the situation of natural disaster (floods) and attacked helpless animals, which were seeking shelter. I have ordered a probe by a team of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau officials,” she said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters that the Government would recommend a CBI inquiry into the incidents over the past three years.

He offered a reward of '5 lakh to anyone who had information regarding the poachers.

KNP director Sanjay Bora stated that poachers killed a female rhino at Dolamara, along the Karbi Anglong hills and removed its horn.

A male rhino was also killed after fleeing the flooded park, and was shot inside Jagdamba Tea Estate, which bordered Bangori range. Its horn was also removed. The rhino is currently fighting for its life in a veterinary hospital, Bora said.

Another female rhino was left bleeding after being shot by poachers, who sawed off her horn and right ear. It died a day later.

Two rhino carcasses were found at the park earlier in the week.

Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain stated to reporters in Guwahati that army personnel would be deployed in fringe areas of KNP in an effort to control the criminal acts.

“We have taken steps to equip forest department personnel with sophisticated weapons and more forest guards will be deployed soon to deal with the situation,” he said.
